I am a cognitive neuroscientist interested in understanding the neurocognitive bases of semantic memory—broadly, how we know what things mean. That is, how do we understand what coffee or democracy means? I investigate how semantic memory relates to other cognitive systems such as those underpinning language (for example, what can something’s label tell us about the properties of that thing?), cognitive control (how we select the right meaning of a word in a given situation), and episodic memory (that is, memory for specific events), using neuroimaging methods such as functional magnetic resonance imaging to answer these questions, in addition to a range of behavioral techniques.
